“I knew I couldn’t make my children better, but I could make their everyday lives better.”
Nothing drives you more in life than your children.
Having 3 boys, 2 who were severely disabled, made Gillian determined to give them a good life…the best life possible.
Thomas passed away aged 21 years old in 2017. The extended family helped Thomas and Sam have a great life.
Every challenge Gillian came across, she was determined to make a change, but to also share it with the world, as much as she could, so others did not have to struggle the way she had done.
Achievements include:
– Fundraising and helping create accessible playgrounds
– Self-build of an accessible home for her boys.
– An Ambassador for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice for 10 years.
– Founder of the Accessible Derbyshire accessible tourism website.
– Co-founder of the Accessible Derbyshire Registered Charity.
– The creator of The Golden Miles officially waymarked walk in the Peak District.
– Becoming a professional access consultant, leader and expert in accessible tourism.
– In 2018 she travelled to Brussels to speak at the Destination For All World Summit, on how Accessible Derbyshire was created and how it had inspired other destinations to improve their accessible tourism offer.
Gillian has plenty to talk about!
She hopes her story will inspire you, with your hopes and dreams
“Never Doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” (Margaret Mead)
